Planning is well underway across the Kimberley for the much-awaited total solar eclipse taking place in July 2028.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, obscuring the view of the Sun from a small part of Earth, either totally or partially. It happens roughly every 18 months. But isn’t always visible here in our region.

According to experts – it’s our turn here in the Kimberley to experience a full total solar eclipse, and that only happens about once every 375 to 400 years.

For our local Miriwoong people, the eclipse is sometimes known as the Sun women and Moon man meeting or fighting.

Culturally it can be interpreted as a significant omen of disruption such as black magic, a disease, or danger requiring spiritual intervention. 

Very illuminating considering the state of the world right now.
